Habib Hajallie has always had his news included with the RBA RISING STARS — but he has now ‘RISEN’ as he was one of the two new Members elected at the AGM.  Congratulations Habib!!

Habib tells us:  His work in The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2021 was on show at Drawing Projects UK in Wiltshire.  He has been invited to show 5 works at The Gallery Holt, Norfolk, as part of their ‘Transience of Beauty’ Exhibition.  This exhibition runs until the 5th April 2022.


For the 2nd year his work in the RBA Annual Exhibition was “Highly Commended” by Sandra de Laszlo and, for the last time his work will also be featured in the RBA RISING STARS exhibition at the Royal Over-Seas League in Mayfair.  The PV for this show is Thursday 28 April, 6 – 8PM.  Ticket only.

Alex J Wood the our Rome Scholarship winner in 2021 will be travelling to Rome on the 1st April for his month-long stay at Sala Uno.  We hope he will keep in touch to share his experiences with us.  We saw his work in the RBA Exhibition as well work from some of our other RBA RISING STARS who had their work selected:



Samuel also had an exhibition of some of his portraits and drawings at the Scottish Arts Club in Edinburgh until the 5th March.  The show was called ‘Art in Words and Hyperrealism’

Ethan Caflisch has a solo exhibition at the ‘a.m. gallery’ in Antwerp until the 23rd April and has work in a group show at Alice’s Oyster Bar and Gallery in Bishopsgate, London, until May 1st.  This show is called “I’ll be your mirror”

Ben Duax had work in an exhibition at the Hyacinth Gallery in Manhattan Chinatown:

RBA Newsletter January 2022

Carole Griffin tells us that she has completed 2 large commissions for “foreign royalty” and Dry Red Press have selected one of her paintings from the last RBA show for their new range of cards.

The Jackson’s Painting Prize 2022 have selected Honorary RBA member Shanti Panchal as one of their “…expert judges and leading figures in the contemporary art world” to select works to be showcased in their competition this year:

We have exciting news from some of our RBA RISING STARS:

Sculptor Poppy Field tells us that as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations, the Royal Albert Hall has commissioned her to sculpt Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip for the South Porch of the building.  The bronze figures will be life size and on permanent display from some time this year

Blaze Cyan was elected to the Society of Wood Engravers in October and tells us that she is now represented by Eames Fine Art gallery in Bermondsey, south London.

Habib Hajallie has been commissioned by Facebook to create 4 artworks in a series called ‘Pioneers’ – people who have influenced society and brought about massive positive changes, yet are perhaps not that well known.  This series includes Dame Jocelyn Barrow [instrumental in bringing about the Race Relations Act], and British-Mexican artist Mary Leonora Carrington, OBE [a founding member of the women’s liberation movement in Mexico during the 1970’s].  These works will be printed onto wallpaper and installed in Facebook’s new London headquarters early this year.


Habib also had a work included in The Royal Miniatures Society exhibition at the Mall Galleries in December and another shortlisted for the Barbican Arts Group Trust Open 2021.

Ethan Caflisch had a residency at Pada in Barreiro, Portugal in the summer of 2020 and has now produced a body of work titled “Run through the tape” which stemmed from this residency:

Ethan’s work was on view at the Tappan Collective in Los Angeles.

Minyoung Choi has two works in the Hive Center for Contemporary Art in Beijng in a group exhibition “A Couple of: The Dual-mechanism of the New Generation of Asian Artists” until January 20, 2022.  The exhibition features “27 cutting-edge Asian artists from around the world, presenting their most recent works”.

RBA Winter Newsletter 2021

The dark nights are setting in earlier now and there is a definite chill in the air most days, so let’s hope that there is not too much severe weather on the horizon for these winter months ahead.

Cheryl Culver has one of her works on the cover of a book written by a psychotherapist which is described as:
“Opens up a neglected landscape for recognition and discussion”
The illustration seems to be a perfect fit!

‘Displacement – A Street in Rome’ by Tara Versey

Thomas Merrett was a finalist in the National Sculpture Prize and his work will be displayed for one year at the Broomhill Estate in Devon. He is creating a series of works called ‘Listener’ and one of these will be a large over life size sculpture for the outdoor group exhibition in the summer:

Another exciting venture is being undertaken by Michael Harrison, who is hoping that his project “Gathered Together: The true meaning of The Flagellation of Christ by Piero Della Francesca” will be funded to commence in January 2022.  The work is an exploration of the inherent  meaning within the painting, presented as a touring exhibition, including innovative technologies and an illustrated book.

RBA Summer Newsletter 2021

The RBA show at the Russell Gallery was very successful once again, achieving over £50,000 in sales and we look forward to having another RBA exhibition with them in 2023 – our bicentenary year. We are also looking forward to an RBA show with the M1 Gallery in November this year [more details to follow shortly] and a possible online exhibition for all FBA members with the Mall Galleries in the autumn too, so there is plenty to look forward to.

Unfortunately we missed David Sprakes’ most recent exhibition which was at the Manchester Academy of Fine Art (MAFA) at Gallery Oldham until June 26, 2021. The exhibition was called ‘Art of the Everyday’ and was a response by artists to lockdown.  His three works are welded steel constructions based on incidental forms in space.   This news arrived too late for our last newsletter, I’m afraid!

Alex J Wood is the winner of our Rome Scholarship 2021!   He says he is ” … over the moon” and looking forward to staying in Rome next spring – Covid permitting of course.  Alex also has an exhibition of his work at The Chelsea Arts Club from May 25th – 13th June.  Included will be new paintings and bronzes including his “Claw of Archimedes”, pictured below:

Another “RBA STAR” who is doing very well and who appears regularly in our newsletters in view of his achievements is Habib Hajalli. He has a work, “Mary Seacole” in the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition on now at the Mall Galleries, and this work was …

“Highly Commended” by Anthony J Lester’s Art Critic Prize:

Molly Lambourn tells us that she has a three month digital residency from April – June at Jane Austen House.   Her work is inspired by the vibrant green ‘Chawton Leaf’ wallpaper in the Dining Room, and explores the intimacy of historical artefacts and ideas of romance, sexuality and scandal…

“RBA STAR” Ruth Murray, who was the winner of the Jacksons Painting Prize in 2020 is this year an ‘Expert Judge’ on the judging panel!   At the moment she has work in a touring exhibition – New Light; Real Northern Art – and it will be at The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle, from the 4th – 29th August.  And I spotted another RBA STAR in the same exhibition …
