Founded in 1823, the Society of British Artists brought together many of the most famous artists of the time. In 1887, under the leadership of James McNeill Whistler, it was granted ‘Royal’ status by Queen Victoria. In the following years, many prominent artists joined, including Walter Sickert, Philip de Laszlo, LS Lowry and Henry Moore.  Among the honorary members were Claude Monet and Alfred Stevens.  Today, honorary members include Royal Academicians such as Ken Howard and Fred Cuming.

The Royal Society of British Artists has become the largest society in the United Kingdom to promote figurative art which, as described by the art critic,  Anthony Lester, “continues to maintain its prestige and excellence for artists and art lovers alike”. In this Exhibition, The Minster Gallery is pleased to highlight the talent as well as the diversity of styles and subjects explored by Members of the RBA.

In addition to professional artists, the RBA recognises individuals who have achieved a high degree of respect and recognition for their artistic work. Distinguished amongst them is the writer and broadcaster,  Andrew Marr.  In his recent book, “A Short Book About Painting”,  Andrew Marr eloquently explains the importance of painting: “Painting is a system of communication with only one message, the sensation of being alive more intensely than normal. (…) For mysteriously, the thought and passion and work that goes into an oil painting can be caught on its dried surface – and then released, time and time again, as energy to the viewer”.

Philip Mould OBE to Open RBA 2018 Exhibition

Philip Mould, well know for his appearances on The Antiques Road Show and Fake or Fortune has kindly agreed to speak and open the RBA 2018 Annual Exhibition.

Philip Mould began art dealing in his early teens and has since built up an international business specialising in early British art and portraiture, a subject on which he is internationally consulted. He recently celebrated his 30th anniversary in the art business.

Dubbed the ‘Art Sleuth’ by journalists for a string of notable art discoveries, his finds include the lost half of Gainsborough’s earliest known work, the only portrait of Prince Arthur Tudor and five lost works by Van Dyck. For twenty years he was art adviser to the Palace of Westminster for whom he found around 200 historical and political works in far flung corners of the globe, as well as advising on political commissions (for which he received the OBE in 2003).

Celebrating 30 years in the art business, an expert in British art and portraiture, Philip’s is a life devoted to the face

He is more widely known for his writing and broadcasting and author of two books on art discovery Sleepers: In Search Of Lost Old Masters (Fourth Estate, 1995) and Sleuth: The Amazing Quest for Lost Art Treasures (Harper Collins, 2011). Both books are frequently cited as the most illuminating and best told insights into the workings of the old master trade, and have been published in America, Japan and China.

Sleuth gave rise to his hit BBC1 show Fake or Fortune? in 2011, a programme now in its sixth series co-presented with Fiona Bruce that seeks to solve art mysteries, and which has become one of the most successful art programmes in recent history. It is shown in over fifty countries across the world and the last run of programmes in July 2015 achieved audiences of up to 6 million. The next series is scheduled for Summer 2017.

Mould is also an ardent conservationist and President of Plantlife International, President and former Chairman of Kids in Museums and patron of Fight for Sight.

In 2013 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of East Anglia where he studied history of art at the Sainsbury Centre.

The Royal Over-Seas League are proud to host RBA Star Students, an exhibition of artwork by talented school students all under the age of 18. Developed by two respected and prestigious organisations, The Arts Society (formerly NADFAS) and the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA), the exhibition is promoting 20 aspiring young artists who were initially proposed by The Arts Society, to then be selected by the RBA from 272 entries. The finalists to be presented at ROSL were selected for their exceptional works which combine the highest levels of skill, expression and draughtsmanship using a variety of medium exploring equally varied subjects. This is the second year that this exhibition is coming to Over-Seas house and we are once again excited to offer our members and friends glimpse into the future of fine art.

Following ROSL, the works will go on display at the Framers Gallery from the 13th to 17th March and then the Mall Galleries from 20th to 31st March, where they will sit alongside the work of professional artists at the RBA’s Annual Exhibition.

Royal Society of British Artists Honours Chinese Artist Sixiao Feng

Chinese artist Sixiao Feng has been invited to become an Honorary Foreign Member of the RBA following in the steps of Giorgio de Chirico and Eduard Vuillard. He said he was absolutely delighted and greatly honoured.
His first UK exhibition was held at the British Museum in October, where more than 50 works were on display. Nick Tidnam, President of the Royal Society of British Artists, had been invited to open the show and he said:

“It’s a great show from a man with enormous talent, skill and understanding of nature. Cultural relationships between the UK and China are important and absolutely what we should be doing. Culture is very important. Mr Feng and I, we don’t have a common language, but we do have the common language of painting, so we understand each other in that respect. I think music, art, these are things with which we cross borders and relate to each other.”

Born in Qingdao, in East China’s Shandong province, 69-year-old Sixiao Feng is one of China’s best-known artists. His paintings are frequently seen in art textbooks.  Feng is also acclaimed worldwide and has held solo exhibitions in the US city of San Francisco, the US state of Hawaii and Canada. His paintings were displayed at Olympic stadiums during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Feng said;
“Britain is the home of watercolour and China has been learning from it for nearly 100 years. These paintings are my attempt to combine the traditional Chinese painting style with Western watercolours, something I have worked on for at least 20 years. Watercolour stems from the West and focuses on the colour and the light, whereas Chinese painting is more about spirits and emotions. I have added some natural spirits and brushing skills from Chinese ink painting to watercolour painting This exhibition is an opportunity for me to know what British people would feel about this particular painting style and also to learn more from British watercolourists.”
